FAQ’s
What is a Registered Training Organisation?
Registered training organisation’s (RTO’s) are authorised to deliver Nationally Recognised Training.
RTO’s can range from companies, industry and professional associations, to schools, TAFE and colleges.
While RTO’s are diverse, ranging from large companies like McDonalds and Woolworths to smaller community-based organisations and schools, they all meet nationally recognised standards of quality and deliver nationally recognised training. These standards are set out and organisations audited to ensure quality, under the VET Quality Framework.
Only RTO’s can deliver, assess and issue qualifications and statements of attainment which are nationally recognised, within the VET Quality Framework.
All RTO’s are listed on a national register of authorised organisations known as Training.gov, allowing potential clients to view an RTO’s services. QTS can be found at this website using National Training provider number: 40474
What is Nationally Recognised Training?
As an RTO, we use the nationally recognised training logo on all qualifications and statements of attainment we issue.
The logo is a valuable statement. It signifies that:
- Training courses are nationally recognised under the VET Quality Framework
- The qualifications issued are nationally recognised by all other RTO’s
This means that those who undertake our training can be confident that the skills they attain are of a high quality at industry standards and will be accepted and valued nationwide by other training providers and by employers.
Participants from other organisations are able to enrol, transfer or complete their training at other institutions.
What is the Australian Qualifications Framework?
The Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) a system of thirteen national qualifications established by the Australian Government that links courses and qualifications. It covers university, vocational education and training, and school education.
The AQF provides guidelines for assessment and accreditation of qualifications, Certificates, Diplomas and Degrees.
The qualifications offered at vocational education and training institutions are Certificates I-IV, Diploma and Advanced Diploma. Should you complete some units from a Certificate you will be issued with a statement of attainment.
Vocational Education and Training Qualifications
The qualifications offered at vocational education and training institutions are Certificates I-IV, Diploma and Advanced Diploma. They meet national industry standards and will prepare you for employment in a host of occupations or for further studies.
Certificate
A certificate is the lowest level of qualification available in Australia. Certificates are taught at four levels, with certificate IV being just one rung below a diploma. A certificate might take anything from a few weeks to a year of full-time study to complete, longer if it is done part-time, of course.
Diploma
A diploma is the lowest level of ‘higher education’ (or university-level study) in Australia. An advanced diploma is a half a step up from a diploma and on par with an associate degree, but one step down from a bachelor degree. Most diplomas take between one and two years, depending on your experience and employment.
Degree
A bachelor degree or ‘undergraduate degree’ usually takes three or four years’ (full-time study) to complete. It’s awarded when you successfully complete a course, which means that you get a special certificate (a ‘parchment’), and can put letters after your name to show which ‘degree’ you have. A BEc, for example, is a bachelor degree in economics, a BEng in engineering, and so on.
Certificate I
Certificate 1 prepares you to perform a defined range of routine and predictable activities. Certificate 1 applications are a variety of employment related skills including preparatory access and participation skills, broad-based induction skills, and may include specific workplace skills possibly in a team environment.
Certificate II
Certificate II provides you with the knowledge and skills to perform a range of varied activities or knowledge application in a defined range of contexts each with a clear and limited range of options. You will take some accountability for the quality of task outcomes. Applications may include some complex or non-routine activities involving individual responsibility, possibly in collaboration with others as part of a team.
Certificate III
With a Certificate III the student acquires a breadth, depth and complexity of knowledge and competencies that cover selecting, adapting and transferring knowledge and skills to new environments. You will also be capable of providing technical advice and some leadership in resolving problems in a range of environments with some complexity in the extent and choice of options available. You will be able to perform a range of skilled operations usually as part of a range of broader related activities involving known routines, methods and procedures. You will exercise some discretion and judgement in selection of equipment, services or contingency measures within time constraints. Applications may involve some responsibility for others. Participation in teams including group or team coordination may be involved.
Certificate IV
You will acquire a breadth, depth and complexity of knowledge and competencies that cover a broad range of varied activities, in a variety of contexts that are usually complex and non-routine. You are expected to be able to demonstrate leadership and guidance of yourself and others, as well as contributing to technical solutions of a non-routine or contingency nature. You will have to demonstrate performance in a broad range of skilled applications including evaluating and analysing current practices, develop new criteria and procedures for performing current practices. In addition to showing leadership and guiding others, you are expected to accept responsibility for others and demonstrate limited organisational skills.
Diploma
Diploma study involves breadth, depth and complexity covering planning and initiation of alternative approaches to skills or knowledge applications across a broad range of technical and/or management requirements, evaluation and co-ordination. Diploma holders will be capable of self-directed application of knowledge and skills, with substantial depth in some areas where judgement is required in planning and selecting appropriate equipment, services and techniques. A diploma student will participate in the development of strategic initiatives and take personal responsibility and autonomy in performing complex technical operations or organising others. Participation in teams both in routine work and undertaking planning and evaluation tasks is expected. Group or team coordination may be involved.
What is the duration of a course?
The duration of a course depends greatly on you, the time you have to dedicate to the learning activities and assessments and the timeframe in which you want to complete the course. All courses do have a maximum timeframe in which they need to be completed; however the minimum is set by you.
What is Competency Based Training & Assessment?
Participants enrolled in training leading to either a statement of attainment or a certificate, are required to complete assessments to demonstrate competency.
Competency based assessment is the process of gathering evidence to confirm that participants can perform required skills and knowledge.
Assessments undertaken may include:
- Case studies
- Short answer questions
- Role plays
- Reports
- Projects
- Work samples
Participants will be given feedback on all assessment activities. Competency based assessment does not use a marking scale rather the participant is deemed competent or not yet competent.
What is a Credit Transfer?
You may be eligible for a credit transfer if you have previously undertaken training through a Registered Training Organisation. Credit transfer may be granted for one or more units.
What happens when I complete my Certificate?
On successful completion of all requirements for the training you will receive a nationally recognised qualification.
Nationally recognised qualifications are qualifications developed to meet the requirements of the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). These qualifications can be awarded only by registered training organisations and are recognised throughout Australia. A nationally recognised qualification, through a registered training organisation means that you will be acquiring skills to meet the needs of industry and employers as well as your own.
